My name is Alireza Sahami Shirazi and I'm a Research Scientist at Yahoo! Labs in Sunnyvale, CA. Before joining Yahoo! I was a postdoctoral researcher in the hcilab group at the University of Stuttgart. I received my Master degree in Media Informatics from RWTH Aachen University. I was awarded my Ph.D. from University of Stuttgart under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Albrecht Schmidt with a dissertation entitled "Exploiting & Sharing Context: Computer-Mediated Nonverbal Communication".
My Research Interests is at the crossroads of ubiquitous computing (Ubicomp) and human-computer interaction (HCI). I am, in particular, interested on mobile devices and how they are used in the daily life. Due to the use of mobile devices in various contexts, determining and utilizing the context for providing context-based services is essential and, indeed, beneficial. Development a prototype, design and conduct of an experiment, and analysis of data is the sequence I have followed to answer a research question or assess an idea. With the emergence of app stores, I have explored conducting user studies in the wild. Having couple of thousands users downloading and using prototypes provides this opportunity to collect users in more real context of use.
I'm also passion about exploring sensing technologies to extend the interaction space of mobile devices and provide new interaction techniques. While using available sensors on mobile devices is one approach, the interaction space can be extended by embedding other sensors to either mobile devices or extended spaces. The extended interaction space can result in development of new interactive systems with higher usability.
